When
Robin Wood opened her aptly named Robin Wood Florals shop last September,
the former Dawn Patroler found herself neatly blossoming into a second career.
The morning
drive-time host for more than two decades on WEBN-FM, Wood finally left
the airwaves last year for her true love -- mixing it up with the lilies
and daffodils at her flower shop on Dana Avenue in Evanston.
"One of
the reasons I got into this business is that my darling husband, Lee,
used to buy me the traditional dozen red roses and baby's breath for every
floral holiday," Wood recalls. "Frankly, I would have vastly preferred
a bunch of spring flowers or at least roses in some sort of interesting
color. Not wanting to hurt his feelings, I decided I'd better just do
it myself, so I opened the shop."
Wood was
25 when she first joined WEBN, replacing Denton Marr on the morning shift.
For more than two decades, she romanced generations of Cincinnati youth
with her seductive voice and suggestive tone.
So, we
thought, who better to ask about the perfect flowers to make the best
of those certain kinds of dates, both glorious and gruesome?
Here is
Robin Wood's personal "Best" list for romantic (or otherwise) floral gifts:
Best
Bouquet to First Attract Someone's Attention: "A small bunch of wild
(or wild-looking) flowers, mysteriously left where they'll be found before
they wilt, with a provacative note."
Best
Bud After a Successful First Date: "A single stem of something, beautifully
wrapped and hand delivered."
Best
Flowers to Send after a Date Where You Want to Be Polite but, Frankly,
You Know There Won't Be Another: "A small, slightly bruised bouquet
from the check-out counter of a convenience store."
Best
Flowers on a First Sleepover: "An all-white (or red) bouquet left
on the pillow with a few lines of poetry."
Best
Flowers for the Parents You're Meeting for the First Time: "A large,
loosely wrapped bouquet of flowers which you claim you harvested especially
for them from your garden. This only works in summer."
Best
Makeup Gift after Your First Major Fight: "A huge bunch of roses and
a beautifully scripted note of apology. There is a plant called Love Lies
Bleeding, but it's pretty hideous and would certainly scare off (your
loved one) for good."
"I can't
think of a single person who wouldn't love to receive flowers, certainly
on a special occasion and preferably just out of the blue for no particular
reason," adds Wood, not failing to mention her shop's phone number. "You
didn't think I'd miss an advertising opportunity, did you?"
