Four families celebrate four birthdays
in the Pope Room at Buca di Beppo.

Best Use of a Coffee Cup (for Something Other Than a Drink)
Historic Beech Flats in Cheviot, where the well-kept secret is that their homemade dinner rolls are baked in a tea cup and served still warm from the oven. Beech Flats, 3230 Harrison Ave., Cheviot, 513-481-1111.

Best Appetizer for Dinner
BarrelHouse's Chicken and Black Bean Quesadilla. Still big enough to feed two people, even for dinner, especially with a home brew on the side. BarrelHouse Brewing Co, 22 E. 12th St., Over-the-Rhine, 513-421-2337.

Best Salad As a Meal
The Salad Nicoise at Trio. Delicious, reasonably priced and we always have some leftover for the next day's lunch. Trio, 7565 Kenwood Road, Kenwood, 513-984-1905.

Best Place to Feel Like a King
Try renting the Pope Room at Buca di Beppo, featuring a private table that sits 16. Be forewarned, though: Saturday nights are already booked through June. Between the tacky décor, portraits of His Holiness and the family-style portions, groups will have plenty to entertain them. Buca di Beppo, 2635 Edmondson Road, Norwood, 513-396-7673.

Best Religious Dining Experience
A lunch at Bell Cafe, nestled into the altar area of old St. Paul's Church/Verdin Bell Co. in Pendleton Square. This lunch spot serves hot sandwiches, a quiche of the day and salads. Check out the Verdin Bell and Clock Museum on the premises while you're there. Bell Cafe, 444 Reading Road, Over-the-Rhine, 513-241-1750.

Best Touch of Old Europe
Cristof's, where they serve a menu full of German and Middle European dishes, such as sauerbraten, goulash and stuffed peppers, as well as a mean shepherd's pie. Cristof's, 16 Village Square, Glendale, 513-772-4300.

Best Seafood Salad
For a seafood salad good enough to make Popeye give up spinach, stop by Sunshine Fine Foods. For the unbelievable price of $4.99 a pound, you get whole shrimp and lobster - the pieces are so big you might need a knife to cut 'em
in a creamy dressing with a bit of celery crunch. Sorry, Charlie, you'll never go back to tuna salad again. Sunshine Fine Foods, 3429 Erie Ave., Hyde Park, 513-321-8071; 720 Elm St., Downtown, 513-723-1331.

Best Upstairs News
When you feel like having dinner in a chic New York, L.A. or Chicago restaurant but are still in Cincinnati, head to Jump Café's upstairs dining room. From the unique furniture to the exquisite lighting, there isn't a better room in the city. Did we mention the food? Jump Café, 1203 Main St., Over-the-Rhine, 513-665-4677.

Best Downstairs News
Olé! If appetizers are your thing, then you'll want to salsa down to the street level area at Jump Café for the tapas menu, with more than 20 sample-sized portions of creatively conceived appetizers. There's Sautéed Calico Bay Scallops ($7), Wood Oven Baked Artichoke Dip with Herb Flatbread ($5) and Sautéed French Brie ($6) covered in a raspberry sauce. Spend a few more bucks for Smoked Chicken Ravioli, served with a chipotle cream sauce and tortillas ($13). Have a little of this and a little of that, share with your friends and not feel guilty. Jump Café, 1203 Main St., Over-the-Rhine, 513-665-4677.

Best Makeover, Restaurant Division
When friendly old Petersen's downtown evolved into Aioli, it got a lot hipper. Julie Francis, formerly of Trio, returned home after several years in Santa Fe to open her own bistro. She uses fresh ingredients to whip up French and Mediterranean dishes like Tequila Cured Salmon with Dill Pancakes, Tomato Creme Fraiche, Peppercorn Country Pate and Gorgonzola Ravioli. Aioli, 700 Elm St., Downtown, 513-929-0525.

Best Makeover, Icon Division
You gotta love the new look of Camp Washington Chili, designed by one of owner John Johnson's daughters. Same place, new building, same food and people, new look (complete with a CityBeat cover story on the wall). It's like eating in a time capsule. Camp Washington Chili, Hopple and Colerain avenues, Camp Washington, 513-541-0061.

Best Olde-Time Zinzinnati
Long-time servers, classic entrées, fresh pies and a Joe Camel-friendly atmosphere qualify the Green Derby as the restaurant that time forgot. Little has changed since the days your grandparents ate here. They probably ordered the hot slaw and mock turtle soup, too. Green Derby, 846 York St., Newport, 859-431-8740.

Best Return of a Favorite
The reopening of the Blue Gibbon, the Chinese restaurant shut down by a fire in 1999. Try the whole steamed fish. Blue Gibbon, 1231 Tennessee Ave., Paddock Hills, 513-641-4100.

Best Little Tokyo
Thank your lucky Toyota execs for establishing Jo An, the most authentic Japanese restaurant you'll ever find in a Kentucky office park. Its Spartan interior looks like an inexpensive noodle bar, but its extensive sushi menu requires deep pockets. Try to make friends with the drunk in the business suit. Maybe you'll get a great deal on an Avalon that fell off the boat. Jo An, 3940 Olympic Blvd., Boone County, 859-746-2634.

Best Pike for Two
Pacific Moon Café's whole pike is mouth-watering and beautifully presented if you can get past the fish's eyes seemingly reprimanding you for straying from your vegetarian diet. Also, the table for eight with the lazy Susan in the center is great for trying lots of different dishes, including the awesome dim sum menu. The owners are opening a new restaurant, Shanghai Lily's, downtown. Pacific Moon Café, 8300 Market Place Lane, Montgomery, 513- 891-0091.

Best Chinese Accent
The unusual dishes served up at P.F. Chang's, such as Spicy Chicken Enclosed in Lettuce Wraps, Kung Pao Scallops and more. P.F. Chang's China Bistro, 2633 Edmondson Road, Norwood, 513-531-4567.

Best Asian Buffet
The $4.98 lunch buffet at Win Wok. All you can eat, and the price includes your drink. Win Wok, 4922 Hunt Road, Blue Ash, 513-984-6577.

Best Fast and Cheap Chinese
Although some people are put off by the EAT sign in the front window, it's tough to beat China Kitchen in Clifton for fast and cheap Chinese. Their expansive "Specials" menu gets you an entrée with rice, egg roll and soup for around $5, and the portions are just big enough to make you ecstatically full. Our favorite is the Lo Mein - tell them to make it about a "6" on the hot scale and you'll be very happy, like dragon. China Kitchen, 323 Ludlow Ave., Clifton, 513-221-5333.

Best Kept Secret on the River
Sayler Park's Cabana Bar. Though it's open only during warm weather, the Cabana Bar is one of the West Side's best-kept secrets for a good, cheap meal, cold drinks and watching the Mighty Ohio roll by. Cabana Bar, 7445 Forbes Road, Sayler Park, 513-941-7442.

Best Place to See Your Neighbors After Church (West Side)
Price Hill Chili. It's a West Side tradition to stop by after mass for breakfast and banter. Price Hill Chili, 4920 Glenway Ave., Price Hill, 513-471-9507.

Best Place to See Your Neighbors After Church (East Side)
The Echo. OK, even without church, it's still the best place to see Eastsiders on a Saturday or Sunday for the city's best breakfast for the buck. The Echo, 3510 Edwards Road, Hyde Park Square, 513-321-2816.

Best Place to See Your Neighbors After Church (Central)
Sugar N Spice, where all the waitresses serve each and every station without leaving from behind the counter. It feeds a perfect world: Jews and gentiles, blacks and whites, laborers and professionals, men, women and children, all breaking bread elbow-to-elbow at counters and in booths, forced to exchange niceties while Mona barks at the cooks to run Mr. Schwartz's wheat toast through the toaster again. Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name. Sugar N Spice, 4381 Reading Road, Paddock Hills, 513-242-3521.

Best Place to See Your Neighbors While Hung Over (Norwood)
If you're hung over and didn't get out of bed until 2 p.m., post-church breakfast is, by default, out of the question. To satisfy the grease need, head to Frisch's in Norwood, which has the best bacon cheeseburgers and fries ever and probably the best Frisch's food ever. Service can suck, because it's a high-traffic spot, but the burgers are perfect. Frisch's, 4765 Montgomery Road, Norwood, 513-531-4100.

Best Burger of the Gods
The Burger By Zeus at Cody's Cafe, which includes spinach, mushrooms and garlic goat cheese. The Green Lantern omelet includes the same. Cody's Cafe, 113 Calhoun St., Clifton Heights, 513-569-0555.

Best Underrated Burger
York Street Café's version is grilled and is available only at lunch time. It's so underrated, it doesn't even have a name on the menu. York Street Café, 738 York St., Newport, 513-261-9675.

Best Food With the Worst Service
This has become an annual category, unfortunately. And the winner/loser is Latin Quarter, which offers Cuban sandwiches (thin sliced pork, chihuahua cheese and pickles on foccacia), Caribbean barbecue wings (served with plantain chips and lemon cream) and a delectable key lime pie, among other creative menu items. On one recent visit, our server greeted us with, "Hi, I was just told by a table that I look 25, and I'm 35! How's that for an ego boost?" Apparently, his newly inflated ego kept him flying high the rest of the evening, as we had to flag him down several times to get any service, waiting an hour for dinner. Note to owners: Instead of expending energy trying to find out who among the CityBeat staff could dare blaspheme you, why not just work to improve the service? Latin Quarter, 6904 Wooster Pike, Mariemont Square, 513-271-5400.

Best You'll-Eat-Whatever-I-Bring-and-Like-It Service
When you're paying for high-quality food and service, like at Latin Quarter, you have room to bitch. When you're jonesing for Anchor Grill's sausage and gravy at 3 a.m. and get ham and eggs instead, don't sweat it. Hakuna matata! Anchor Grill, 438 Pike St., Covington, 859-431-9498.

Best Use of Color in a Dining Room
Aioli and Latin Quarter. Warm Southwestern colors with local artist Merle Rosen's bold murals help set the mood at Aioli. Passionate, sexy reds with sinewy curves give Latin Quarter a distinctive personality. Aioli, 700 Elm St., Downtown, 513-929-0525. Latin Quarter, 6904 Wooster Pike, Mariemont Square, 513-271-5400.

At Javier's, where you can pick from corn tortillas with chicken and molé (chocolate) sauce, Mexican lasagna, pork carnitas with avocado and more. Javier's Mexican Restaurant, 39 E. Court St., Downtown, 513-381-EATS.

Best Bagel Nazi
People have heard of the Soup Nazi, but Cincinnati has its own bagel version over at the Brueggers in Clifton. As you wait in line for your sun-dried tomato bagel with lox and cream cheese, you get the pleasure of hearing in the far-off distance of the bagel ovens the insane screaming of Alex the Bagel Chef. When he's finished with a fresh batch of scalding bagels, he screams, "HOT BAGELS!" like some demented Bagel Nazi from the third dimension. Brueggers Bagels, 3317 Clifton Ave., Clifton, 513-221-2243.

Best Offbeat Sandwiches
Barrister's Euro-Tavern, where the lawyers from Court Street line up for a varied selection that includes the champagne bratwurst sandwich, baked brie and other hot and intriguing lunch items. Barrister's Euro-Tavern, 913 Sycamore St., Downtown, 513-651-5013.

Best Chicken Salad Sandwich
Paula's Gourmet Deli by the downtown Post Office offers herbed chicken salad heaped on toasted bread. We believe it's flavored with rosemary, among other herbs. Plus, their chips are the big ruffled kind, not those stale chips you normally get with your deli sandwich. Paula's Gourmet Deli, 525 Vine St., Downtown, 513-381-3354.

Best Cheap Turkey Club
Head to Daniel's for the best and perhaps cheapest club sandwich in town, with shaved turkey, perfectly cooked bacon and just the right amount of mayo. Daniel's, 2735 Vine St., Corryville, 513-281-1026.

Best Manhattan-Style Deli
You'll feel like you're in NYC with one of Pilder's Deli's Kosher stuffed sandwiches, matzo ball soup and latkas. The deli is guaranteed Kosher and is supervised by the Vaad Hoier of Cincinnati. And no annoying New Yawk accents. Pilder's Deli, 4070 E. Galbraith Road, Dillonvale, 513-792-9961.

Best Hoagies
At the Lazy Gourmet's new downtown restaurant, they have a "hoagie bar" where you can put together your own favorite, choosing from delectable items such as havarti or gouda cheese, honey ham or pastrami, spinach or cilantro and five flavored mayos. Lazy Gourmet, 250 E. Fifth St., Downtown, 513-241-5975.

Best Counter Balance
At the Alabama Fish Bar, throw together frantic fry staff and a mob of hungry customers into this cramped Over-the-Rhine fish stand, and you have the funniest show in town. People yell back and forth. Customers fall out the door in Keystone Cops fashion. Our favorite recurring character is the fat man with the red Cadillac who keeps demanding, "You better move this counter back. I need my room!" Alabama Fish Bar, 1605 Race St., Over-the-Rhine, 513-241-2255.

Best Place to Take Joe Camel for a Business Lunch
The Brew House has a smoking section, a smokier section and a smokiest section. Asthmatics are welcome to sit outside. Listen to live music, drink a beer and enjoy your burger in the nicotine fog. It's so smoker-friendly, you'll think you're in Paris. Vive la Brew! Brew House, 1047 E. McMillan, Walnut Hills, 513-961-9058.

Best Coffee Place to Meet a Beat Poet
Highland Coffee House has been around long enough to serve a real Beatnik or two. Over the years, little has changed inside. Grab a sandwich. Drink an espresso. Smoke a cigarette. Enjoy the dusty mess. A Beat wouldn't have it any other way. Highland Coffee House, 2839 Highland Ave., Corryville, 513-861-4151.

Best Coffee Place to Shake, Rattle and Roll
Buzz Coffeeshop is all about coffee and music, and it doesn't get much better than that. There's a well-stocked selection of local and used CDs to peruse, and their tasty shakes are a welcomed respite from the oppressive Cincinnati summer humidity. You might even see your grandma's old kitchen table while gulping down that latte. Buzz Coffeeshop & CD-O-Rama, 2900 Jefferson Ave., Corryville, 513-221-3472.

Best Coffee Place on the Move
Sitwell's move down the street next to the Esquire was a godsend. Coffee galore, good food, Internet access, interesting patrons and great board games. What more can you ask for? The only problem is finding an open table. Get there early. Sitwell's Coffee House, 344 Ludlow Ave., Clifton, 513-281-7487.

Best Burritos in Hell
The Comet has a unique neighborhood atmosphere, tasty late-night burritos, a wide selection of beers and just about the best juke box in town (Wire, Richard Hell, The Stooges, classic Country). And despite the often high quotient of scenesters, the mix of patrons is unlike any other. One puzzling question: Who designed the men's bathroom? The Comet, 4579 Hamilton Ave., Northside, 513-541-8900.

Best Latin Jukebox
At La Mexicana, which incidentally has just about the Best Latin Everything. From birria (seasoned goat meat) to tequila lollipops, this place oozes authenticity. Even the bottles of Coke report they're bottled in Mexico. Back to the jukebox: Every song is a Latin American hit or standard. La Mexicana, 642 Monmouth St., Newport, 859-291-3520.

Best Chocolate Fondue
Tink's, the new place off Ludlow Avenue in Clifton, offers this evil temptation to which we happily succumb. Chunks of kiwi, pineapple, strawberry and starfruit are provided for dipping. Hey, that makes it health food, doesn't it? Tink's, 3410 Telford Ave., Clifton, 513-961-6500.

Best Varied Menu in a Place You Wouldn't Expect It
Main Street Cafe in Newtown. From their sweet potato stix with calypso sauce, to a meal's end treat, the peach cobbler, this restaurant has everything you could want. Main Street Cafe, 6903 Main St., Newtown, 513-272-2030.

Best New Bones
The meaty slabs of baby back ribs at Tony Roma's, an American rib grill built, ironically enough, on the ashes of the Montgomery Inn rib joint that burned to the ground four years ago. Slather on the house Carolina Honey sauce and enjoy. Tony Roma's, 4022 Mount Caramel-Tobasco Road, Cherry Grove, 513-528-0290.

Best Neighborhood Bones
Lenny's BBQ, on the short side of California Avenue, west of Paddock, is a relatively new establishment that has that old-time French Fry store feel. Owner Len Goodwin is a quiet, self-made fortysomething who grew up in Bond Hill as a teen. Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday there's a constant stream of cars coming from all over who have heard by word of mouth about the great barbecue. Lenny's BBQ, 1144 California Ave., Bond Hill, 513-242-2949.

Best Brunch for Families
Big roomy tables and a cozy ambiance make deSha's good for family get-togethers. They have breakfast and a full lunch. For breakfast there's all the usuals, but you can have your pancakes made fresh for you with blueberries and chocolate chips. The lunch menu goes the whole nine yards with beef, pork, turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes, among others. deSha's, 11320 Montgomery Road, Symmes Twp., 513-247-9933.

Best Brunch for Cheapskates
One of the best breakfast dives in the city is the Proud Rooster, where you can get a fried ham steak and a mound of home fries for next to nothing. And they're so unpretentious here that they don't bother with any fey partitions to keep the dark evil of smokers away from the purity of the nons. Findlay Market, Elder Street between Race and Elm, Over-the-Rhine, 513-721-6533.

Best Greens, Sandwiches and Smokes
For fresh fruit and vegetables, sandwich fixings, really cheap cigarettes and a salad bar that doesn't pretend to be more than it is, Cianciolo's has what it takes to be one of the best. Cianciolo's, 720 Main St., Downtown, 513-421-5051.

Best Greek Greens
Dewey's Greek salad is tough to beat, with lots of roasted garlic cloves, feta, kalamata olives, sun-dried tomatoes, roasted red onions and roasted red pepper vinaigrette dressing. Plus the portions are huge. It's not exactly the healthiest salad, but who cares? The white pizza and a glass of pinot noir are a perfect complement. Dewey's Pizza, 3014 Madison Road, Oakley, 513-731-7755.

Best Place to Close the Deal
Reserve one of Nicholson's booths for a business meeting. If you're lucky, you'll get the semi-private booth, perfect for avoiding distractions. But all of the booths are large enough for conducting business, and the tall barriers between them help block the noise. Nicholson's, 625 Walnut St., Downtown, 513-564-9111.

Best View from Northern Kentucky

Best Eggplant Parmesan
At Arnold's. The sauce isn't too sweet and doesn't kill you with richness. We're partial to our grandma's sauce and normally don't order anything with marinara at a restaurant. Plus Arnold's is still just a cool old place to go. Arnold's Grill, 210 E. Eighth St., Downtown, 513-421-6234.

Best New Challenge to Graeter's
The opening of both Ben & Jerry's and Maggie Moo's in the city. We'll never abandon our beloved Graeter's raspberry chocolate chip, but these two ice cream invaders do give one pause to consider the options. At Maggie's, flavorings are hand-mixed into the ice cream on a chilled marble slab, then wrapped into a waffle cone. At B&J's, the Cherry Garcias and Chunky Monkeys practically reach out from the cooler and grab you. Ben & Jerry's, 12090 Montgomery Road, Symmes Twp., 513-583-8950.
